In 1964 a Finnish farmer sold his livestock, bought a lorry, and began building sofas in a hay barn

His name was Pentti Viitala. He sold them door to door in Kurikka, in western Finland.

Luonto is still owned by his family, and still built in Finland. Most of the craftsmen have been at the bench more than twenty years.

The frames are Nordic spruce and birch plywood. The offcuts are burned to heat the workshops.

“Luonto” is the Finnish word for nature. It was not chosen by a marketing department.
